In Greek the word hodos means, highway, journey way, or path. When Jesus says, “I am the way, the truth, and the life” in John 14:6, He is declaring Himself the path. The path is not only the journey we find ourselves on every day, it is also the very place we encounter Jesus, for Jesus is the path.
Often, we can be so distracted by the events of our lives that we do not see what the path through the events holds for us. Life overwhelms and we are wooed by distractions and numbed along the way. Psalm 23:3 says “…He guides me in paths of righteousness for His name’s sake.” This summer our desire is that we encounter Jesus, our path, as we journey together. We will spend the summer months being led by and beholding attributes of God together. We will receive and behold God, our Good Shepherd.
Each week, we will focus on a new attribute and practice a way of beholding and receiving it. God is good, nurturing, creative, safe, beautiful, persistent, merciful, abundant, comforter, kind, fun and playful, sufficient, and love. And, God is so, so much more than these.
As we prepare this portion of our journey together ask yourself these questions:
- What attribute or name of God do you most often encounter in your everyday life?
- What attribute of God’s character do you long to receive?
- What distracts you from receiving God along your life’s path?
Take some time out to lean into these questions and ask God to reveal more of His character to you as we journey the path alongside one another this summer.
